Baltic Sail is a cruise on traditional wooden vessels between 6 towns in five countries. Klaipeda in Lithauania, Norrköbing in Sweden, Rostock and Travemünde in Germany, Gdansk in Poland and Elsinore in Denmark.

Launched in August 1997, the Baltic Sail cruise was the brainchild of the six towns themselves, who have agreed to collaborate on the project until 2001.

Each town undertakes to ensure that two ships take part in the whole trip, which lasts the whole of August. At each of the six towns a port festival is held, lasting 3-4 days. It is a celebration for the ships and their crews and passengers, but also for the local population, who are given the opportunity to see all the beautiful ships and go on day trips on board a ketch or perhaps a Russian full rigger. It is also possible to go on the whole trip to all four towns.

The aim is to form links between thise towns and countries; each town's port festival contributes to the development of regional tourist, business and cultural life.

At BTC, the Baltic Tourism Commission, which develops tourism in the countries bordering the Baltic, they believe that these traditional vessels, plying their trade across the waters as Baltic Sail does, do invaluable work in promoting the Baltic Region. By means of these vessels, a direct link is set up between the towns of the former Hanseatic League and history is brought back to life.
