Harbour enlargement 1824
On 19 May 1824, royal assent was given for the enlargement of Helsingør Harbour, coinciding with its instatement as a Government Harbour, now known as the Port of Elsinore.
The new harbour was designed by Harbour Master Henne. The project was simply to extend the south harbour pier and to relocate the north pier to a point in between the Kronborg fortifications and Alléen, currently known as Allégade. As part of this enlargement programme a landing stage was at long last constructed outside the Øresund Customs House in 1827-28, in conjunction with the erection of a quarantine station, subsequently followed by a privateering house on the quay.

1829 saw the completion of work on enlarging Helsingør's harbour which was now not only 5 times larger but also considerably deeper. Naturally, the harbour was now equipped with all the facilities required for the ships such as the temple-like water supply station put up in 1827 near Havnegade. Here, the water company, Helsingør Vandkompagni, took the chance to boost its meagre resources using a water carrier and canvas hoses to supply the ships with drinking water. There were obviously scenes of considerable bustle and clamour with everyone vying to get there first.
In 1830 a bascule light of the latest design was erected over the southern pier-head and a small shelter was built for the harbour superintendent in order to allow him to oversee the incoming traffic.

Plan of the Helsingør Harbour Sound Toll Quarter c. 1850. Life was centred around the harbour, enlarged between 1834-28. Here were the Øresund Customs House with the quarantine pier, shipyard, cookhouse, watering station, ferry company and pilots offices, and also the town's tollbooth and warehouses. The buildings along Strandgade and Stengade accommodated the tollbooth agents and foreign consuls. Along the beach to the southwest of the town are several "hills", small moorings, dredged up anchors etc. To the east the town abuts the glacis of Kronborg. Pieced together from contemporary maps.
